And I think wrestling with how to evaluate Manhunt 2 is part of it.I put myself through much more of this game than I felt comfortable doing, in the name of a fair review to a game that has been criticized by religious groups and attorneys who’ve never played it. I figured, like “American History X” has characters you can’t identify with, it might ultimately succeed in getting some message across. I kept looking for a message and kept finding myself more uncomfortable and unhappy. I’ve been following the Manhunt 2 controversy since the beginning, always insisting that I wanted to be the judge. Unfortunately or fortunately, I never was able to play the game in its blood-soaked original form, which surely toes the line between art and madness. I did, however, see a film reel of uncensored brutality that was originally in Manhunt 2 (and still appears on the PSP UMD), but was cut out of the game. That didn’t help me understand what Rockstar was going for, but it did allow me to see how the ESRB fouled developers up.Manhunt 2 for PS2Now that I’ve played Manhunt 2 in all three of its forms, I think this game is unrelenting torture to the player as much as it is to the countless NPCs that the protagonist kills.

I am a fan of what some people would describe as violent videogames, but Manhunt 2‘s violence is so personal and extreme that it’s hard to do it without feeling a lump in your throat. There’s something altogether different about shooting an alien or Nazi than sneaking in the dark behind someone and executing them. Not to say that the bad guys don’t deserve what they’re getting–sort of.There are three different methods of execution–one more gruesome than the next. It seems like pretty much anything you find laying around can be used to make the murders worse and worse. That’s if you make it past images that range from filthy to disturbing, language that would make Marines look up, and sloppy controls.Manhunt 2 for Wii.

If you miss your target, you basically end up pressing the same button over and over again. There doesn’t seem to be too much control beyond that.That’s pretty much the whole idea. A loss of control. And though there’s some twisted irony in a brainwashed psychopath who can stealthily kill and move on–each time with less and less remorse– I think the inability to throw a good punch takes away from the game.About being a brainwashed psychopath, I suppose the story may suggest otherwise. Your character was actually taken advantage of by some evil men, and–after a mental ward break–they’re out to get you back. Again, if you can make it past all these other issues, you can find a story that’s too thin to be believable, and yet it’s deeper than you might otherwise expect. If you accept the game world as reality, the actions you take begin to make more sense.

At the very least, as a gamer, you are unable to advance in the story and the title without setting your moral compass aside. Now, I realize some of the elements of Manhunt 2 that so turn me off could be just what the doctor ordered for someone. There is an audience for the “Saw” series, after all. But on a serious note, I think folks who want to play a soulless murderer–or want to torture pixels–will be left wonting, too.The ESRB forced Rockstar to remove a lot of the violence. Now, killing is a confusing mess of screwed up images–particularly on the uber-censored Wii. That means fans of ultra-gore will likely be disappointed by the title as well. Imagination can make these things worse, but you could say the same thing about a book.Manhunt 2 for PS2.

For those who still want to step into the nightmare, the stealth system that forces you to hold your breath when someone’s nearby–and the use of darkness–are good devices. Also, aside from the censored executions, the game’s environment is creepy and detailed. And sound will make your heart jump out of your chest.Even though I don’t see eye-to-eye with Manhunt 2‘s vision, I am even more against the ESRB’s censorship. Maybe people should not play this game–for the number of reasons I listed in this review–but that should be the decision of adults. In its current form, it’s vile for any number of reasons, but it isn’t the bloodbath it was meant to be.As some art school fare meant to be played only by a select group in a closed environment, it could have scored more points.

Kirby's speed is easier to manage in this game than it was in Canvas Curse, making for less frustrating exploration. Kirby and the rainbow curse rom. The first world starts off easy, as you learn to control Kirby by tapping him to move and drawing rainbow ropes that he can ride in any direction.

And even if the negative press and shock value help Manhunt 2 sell some units, the game’s not going to have the effect it otherwise would.
